  • Notes
    • Gayla Gorton Clark passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter on April 19, 2014, surrounded by her family. Gayla was born January 23, 1925, in Soda Springs, Idaho, the second of three children of Sarah Dorleska (Dorothy) Sterrett and Rees Dubois Gorton.

She married Kermit Conard Christensen in 1943. They were later divorced.

In 1957, Gayla married the love of her life, Lowin Woodrow Clark. They were later sealed in the Logan, Utah Temple.

Gayla’s life has always been centered around her family, the church, and music. She was an experienced pianist and accompanist, and throughout her life she enjoyed accompanying numerous vocal and instrumental musicians. She especially enjoyed accompanying her daughters.

Gayla served continually in the church, almost always having a calling in music. She also served in the presidencies of ward and stake auxiliary organizations, including Young Women’s, Relief Society, and Primary. She and Woodrow served as ordinance workers in the Provo Temple, and following Woody’s death, Gayla served a Family History mission in the Pennsylvania Pittsburgh Mission.

Gayla worked from 1953 to 1969 as executive secretary to the General Superintendent of U.S. Steel’s Geneva Works in Provo, Utah. She later was employed as the Administrative Secretary to two of Provo’s mayors.

After retiring in 1989, she and Woody did some traveling until his health declined. Woody passed away unexpectedly in 1991.

At the age of 77, Gayla joined the dance group Jean’s Golden Girls. As a member of this group, she performed at Disneyland, the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake, and numerous college and NBA basketball halftimes.

Gayla is survived by her four daughters: Patti (David) Schwab of Ririe, Idaho; Carol Ann (Robert) Ridge of Provo; Janice (Larry) Evans of Orem; and Cathryn (John) Dalrymple of Henderson, Nevada. She is also survived by her step-children: Pat (Andrew) Farr of Salt Lake City, Carol Sue (Boyd) Clark of Spanish Fork; and William (Janith) Clark of Fruit Heights, and by her sister Patricia Black of Orem. Gayla’s posterity includes 34 grandchildren and 83 great-grandchildren. We as her family feel proud and blessed to call Gayla our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 26 at 11:00 a.m. at the Timpview Stake Center, 1050 North 600 West, Orem, Utah. Friends may call Friday, April 25 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the funeral services at the same location. Interment will be at the Provo City Cemetery, 610 South State Street, Provo, Utah.
