ask Gramps

"ask Gramps" started as an effort by Clay Gorton to communicate with his grandchildren via the Internet and answer their doctrinal questions. His column was soon picked up by Mormon Town and more recently with LDS Living and quickly became a favorite. Now, Gorton may have one of the largest audiences and forums in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - and it's worldwide! "Gramps," as he is affectionately called, is more than qualified. He has had extensive experience in counseling others in the capacity of bishop, stake president, mission president and MTC president. His years of answering questions about doctrine have provided him a library of information that he has carefully catalogued. Drawing people to the scriptures and the words of the prophets has been his trademark, carefully guiding the questioner to deep meanings and sublime truths.

Questions are many and varied:

Why does God send mentally handicapped children into the world?

Is coffee-flavored ice cream against the Word of Wisdom?

To whom are children of divorced parents sealed?

Is cremation an acceptable practice?

Where are the lost Ten Tribes?

Accolades are constant:

"You are a gold mine!"

"That is positively the best explanation I've been given to date. I hope you don't mind if I print this out and share it."

"On your answer concerning headlights and light speed, may I say I've never read a more eloquent explanation. What I found most interesting was your comment on where the theory of relativity will end up. It is, after all, just a theory! Given that technology is approximately doubling every six months, we arrive at an exponential equation that boggles the mind of anyone born near the turn of the last century."

"I enjoy Mormon Town - the Ask Gramps feature is probably my favorite. I have told many of my friends about your site. Thank you so much."

"I love your explanations of things. They are simple and straightforward, yet never stuffy."

"How did you get so smart? I would be happy if you adopted me as your grandson."

"Gramps, I think you do a wonderful job. Your answers are thorough, understandable, referenced by standard works and general authorities, and therefore doctrinally sound. I appreciate the fact that many of them are loving and kind to the writer."

"Gramps, when do you plan on publishing a book of all the questions you have received, and your replies?"

Well, here it is - a wonderful collection of questions answered by a true gospel scholar. Witty, fun, informative, inspiring -- a great gift for anyone, young or old.
