  • Notes
    • He was the first of the American Sweet Bone-setters in Rhode Island. Came to Rhode Island with his parents from Salem, Massachusetts in 1632-37. The Greene family accompanied the Sweets from Salem. He also lived at Prudence Island, Rhode Island. He was married 3 times but all children were of his 1st wife, Mary Greene.

In 1631 James Sweet lived in Warwick, RI, had land grant at Salem.
In 1648 he was recorded as an inhabitant of Warwick, RI
In 1655 he was made a free man at Warwick--no longer was indebted to the government of England for debts of himself or his ancestors.
1653, 1658, 1659 he was Commissioner at Warwick, RI 1656 Juryman.

This family was baptized into the Mormon Church between 1890 and 1918 per Mormon Church records.

James Sweet was a freeman in 1655, Commissioner from Warwick 1653-8-9 and a juryman in 1656. He died in 1695.

He was progenitor of the "celebrated natural bone setters".

Updike, in his History of the Narragansett Church, page 91, says : "James Sweet, the father of Benoni, emigrated from Wales to this country and purchased an estate at the foot of Ridge Hill -so called-, in North Kingstown, the same on which the late William Congdon lived and died. Benoni had been a captain in the British service, was well informed and of polished manners. He was a natural bone-setter and the progenitor of the race in Rhode Island. He was styled Doctor Sweet, but he practiced in restoring dislocations only. He was a regular communicant of the church, and officiated as a vestryman until his death, July 19, 1751. Says the record, 'Died, Captain Benoni Sweet, of North Kingstown, in the 90th year of his age. Dr. MacSparran preached his funeral sermon, and buried him in the cemetery of his ancestors.'
